First Impressions: Google+ (And Invites!)

Google’s venture into the social networks has begun (well, since the conception of GMail it was just a matter of time) and we have a bunch of invites to give out. At the moment it’s still quite bare, but the infrastructure seems more streamline than Facebook.

This could be because Google has been around forever and knows how to make accessibility and navigation the highest priority and have the technical skills to apply them. I find uploading photos easier / faster, and the fact that Google owns Picasa (rumoured to be renamed Google Photos) suggests the integration of online editing of your photos.

In fact, Google owns SO many things, and with the highly likely possibility of integrating these things opens up a world of opportunities. Having Youtube, Picasa, Android (which includes the ENTIRE Android market), eBooks, Gmail, GTalk, Maps, Earth, and Reader all in one place gives Google+ so much potential. Google has also acquired casual game developers Slide and SocialDeck, so it seems they are ready to take on the currently monopolised Facebook social gaming market.

And the introduction of ‘Circles’ is perfect as it means you can add certain ‘friends’ you meet online that you want to play regularly with, without having to add them to your personal info or lives.

The great thing about Circles is that unlike in Facebook where relationships are required to be mutual, Google+ takes on an asymmetric approach in mapping out relationships. This can be handy for gamers who want to casually add friends, without having to let them in on their personal lives. – Francis Tan (

Anyway, I hope this becomes the one stop for all things Google and the next big thing in social networking. Who knows, maybe they might even integrate that search engine of theirs, what’s it called again?

We have some invites to give away, so just leave your name and e-mail (it has to be a Gmail e-mail) in the comments, and I’ll send them through. If you’re on tumblr feel free to reblog it, MIGHT UP YOUR CHANCES HEY!?

I imagine facebook will take a slow decent down from the top of the hill. Even Myspace is kicking around, even xanga and geocities are somehow dangling on the web still. I’d like to see it catch on like wildfire, but I can only imagine what might oust Google plus in the next decade or so.

I’m really interested in seeing how different Google+ is to Facebook, and I heard the privacy policy is more beneficial to those using it. I haven’t really been using Facebook recently, maybe Google+ is something new and interesting that I would use more often.

Nice article! Should be interesting to see what it’s like. Seems a bit too Facebook so far in my opinion, but we’ll see!
